Turnip Day

Learned a new phrase today. Or rather, learned that yet another innocuous phrase has now been co-opted by the low-class culture to mean something lewd. “Turn up” in dictionary terms means to show up somewhere, or if it has an object [“turn up the ___”], means to raise volume or other thing that can be amplified. In Ebonics, apparently, “turn up” is a code word for “drink or smoke or do some form of drug to the point of blackout, illness or unconsciousness.” Not that anyone who uses that word in that way would talk like that to define it, mind you… When I asked two girls who called tomorrow “turnup day” what they meant by “turnip day,” they asked “do you go to church?” Apparently they recognized that people who give any sort of heed to a morality of temperance would not be the sort of people to “turn up.” They reeked of beer, or weed, whichever.
